[Notes to Yr 1 Parents] IP Promotion Criteria and Enrichment Modules

Dear parents, attached, please find:
  1. The Promotion Criteria for IP students
  2. Letter on the enrichment modules available in SJI (please note the upcoming IP Briefing on 25 Jan for IP students)
  3. My briefing slides with all students last week during Orientation (do ask your son to explain the slides to you)
Note that other than the formal enrichment programmes outlined in the letter above, there is a Maker's Programme targeted at Innovation DSA students that will also be available to all Yr 1 IP students (subject to availability of places) which will be held on alternate Wednesdays from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm. Details of this programme and registration for it will be shared at a later date.

To avoid information overload for you, I will be updating you on the Curriculum Outlines and Assessment Outlines for IP students next week. An archive of all my notes will be available at the Year 1 website (do check it if you have updated your email addresses after 10 Jan).

Do note that to encourage our students to be independent, my subsequent notes will be directed at students but I will always keep parents in the cc list for important notes. Sometimes, our tones when addressing students may sound serious but we have layers of safety nets to allow students to make mistakes in a safe environment, and when a student tear through too many of these, I will meet up with parents for remediation actions required by the student. Grooming our students into self-directed and independent persons is a number one priority for the Foundation Programme and we hope to get your support in working together towards this target. Sometimes, this can be as simple as changing from saying "Don't forget to sign up for ADM" to "Which subjects are you interested in for ADM?".

Academic Notes for Year 1 Parents

Dear parents, 
I'm sorry to send you a message only today as we have been waiting for more parents to complete the email addresses update. A short introduction - I am in charge of Academics in the Foundation Programme, and my job scope mainly involves coordinating the Academic Heads of all subjects within the Foundation Programme, as well as taking care of the academic needs of students in Year 1 and Year 2, whether they are in the O-level Programme or the Integrated Programme. I am also the Head of Mathematics in the Foundation Programme.

My first note to you involves two matters:
  1. The ADM slot in the timetable is an enrichment module that will only start in Term 1 Week 8. It is available to ALL students. I will send all parents a formal letter on the enrichment programmes in SJI available to all students after the Orientation Week.
    For IP students, after the Orientation Week, we will make use of the ADM slots to brief IP students. 
    I will keep parents informed of when the ADM slots will be used. Otherwise, students can go home after the previous lesson before ADM.

  2. I apologize for a mistake that we made in the book list - the Mathematics textbook is not optional, please buy the textbook in the book list and do note that the Sec 2 textbook will be used in the second half of Sec 1, so you might as well buy both at the same time. Also, please take care to buy the correct book. If you bought the wrong one from our bookshop, you can ask for an exchange if there are no markings made on the book already. The textbook is still available in our school bookshop - if copies run out within the day, they will restock the following day.

    In the past, we had relied on a set of notes that we print for all students. While this had served us well, we are also conscious of some issues with this practice. First and foremost, when notes are given to students, it takes away from them the opportunity to learn to organize their learning and truly learn how to learn. In our pursuit for efficiency, we have made things easier for students by giving them notes, and in the process we fail to prepare them for the real world where they have to organize their own thoughts and learning from a variety of resources. As such, we will henceforth teach students to access a greater variety of resources, whether they are textbooks or website or youtube videos, so that students learn to learn and become independent learners. 
    Another reason is that the context of learning Mathematics and the Mathematics syllabus itself (whether the O-levels or the International Baccalaureate) has been changing, and this change is better managed by textbook publishers. By using a textbook from a major local publisher, and supplementing it with other resources, especially those from the IB Middle Year Programme, we hope to create a curriculum that is based on our strong Singapore model but with international elements.
    Please be assured that our teachers will still hand-hold your child as we help them to grow into independent learners. We will give more structures to students who need them more.
